Cheesecake

I know it's not really a cancan, but I couldn't resist posting it.  See the original at the Simply Sassy/Retrogirly blog at:

Alexis Smith

Alexis Smith in a perfectly photographed spin.  I've already reblogged this over at Tumblr, but it belongs here too because of the time period and because it is such a great image.  The photographer is not indentified.

You can see the original at the Simply Sassy/Retrogirly Tumblr blog, which has a very nice collection of images - cheesecake, glamour, risque, with some nudity.

See this photo at;

And the Simply Sassy/Retrogirly blog at:

I recall another full-out Alexis Smith spinning photo in Life magazine - I believe in an Hungarian costume.  I don't know if it is available online.

An Exceptional Photo

One of the better classic period photos I have seen.  It appears to be of dancers from one of the Paris shows of the 1940s-50s, but I am not sure which one.

This comes from the Simply Sassy/retrogirly Tumblr blog:

http://retrogirly.tumblr.com/post/61899702257

I have reblogged it there at my own Tumblr page, but it deserves a place here too perhaps more than there.

The Simplay Sassy/retrogirly Tumblr has a great collection of cheescake, glamour and risque photos, with some nudity.  The home page is:

The familar photo rendered in black and white for this magazine.  From an EBay auction.

Reflections

This must be from a Busby Berkeley film or at least an imitation.  Not a cancan, but not too far off and an interesting idea that produced a neat photo.  This is from a Tumblr blog, but unfortunately I have lost the cite.

Nana 1926 by Jean Renoir

'French Cancan' wasn't Jean Renoir's first exposition of the cancan.  The film "Nana" from the 1920s also includes one, albeit quaint.

A Great Photo

Danseuse de French Cancan, c1930 (Murray Korman)
Reblogged from the Tumblr pages of Laura McPhee who has assembled a wonderful collection of museum quality female images from the 1920s through the 1970s, predominantly in black and white. Worth a visit!
 http://lauramcphee.tumblr.com/post/61628376034/danseuse-de-french-cancan-c1930-murray-korman

http://lauramcphee.tumblr.com/
This photo is the work of Murray Korman. It's a fantastic image. I'm not able to identify the dancer to any particular show - Moulin Rouge, Bal Tabarin, etc.
The photo is on offer at auction.fr:
I have reblogged this already at Tumblr, but it is such a nice classic image that I thought it belonged here too.

The pose reminds me of one of the "Bal Tabarin" set from several decades earlier:

Frilly Knickers

An Iconic Image

It started life as a 1950's record album cover but has been adapted many times.  I like this charcoal version, which appears at this Russian site:

Visit this site to see a very nice collection of Parisian posters and artwork, some of which you probably haven't seen before.

Dancing at the Don Juan

The caption: "The Tough Can-Can: Ilonka, with 'high-kick retalned' and her two partners down in a splits at the end of her solo. Dancing at the Don Juan: Ilonka Nagy, Helene Doret, Monique Tanguy."
I'm not sure what or where the Don Juan was.

Mary Lee

This photo, which dates from 1940, is available at an EBay auction.  It identifies the very flexible dancer as Mary Lee.  It was taken by Reprograph Studios in the UK, so presumably she was English..

From an EBay auction of 1920s French music hall photocards that were originally included in cigar boxes sold by Trinidad & Hno, a Cuban cigar manufacturer.  More details about the cards and some other non-cancan examples can be seen at the following auction, where you can buy the cards:

Dinah Shore vs. the Hoop Skirt

Dinah Shore in a couple of cancanesque cheesecake photos presumably taken during the 1940s, when she was still more of a starlet than a star.

Le Bresilien

A photo of Dario Moreno, who had a lock on the role of Le Brésilien in La Vie Parisienne for many years, cavorting with his cancan girls.

This is from tips, an Italian images site, which has many period photos for sale.

You can find tips at:

http://tipsimages.it/

This photo and a few more of Mr. Moreno mugging for the camera and even dancing with Brigette Bardot are at:

http://tipsimages.it/Search/Search_Editorial.asp?imid=1039274&or_h=h&or_v=v&or_s=s&or_p=p&tp_f=f&tp_i=i&tp_c=c&ps_1=1&ps_2=2&ps_3=3&ps_g=g&foid=44&cl_c=c&cl_bw=bw&ched=ed&LAID=2&SRCV=Dario&IMTP=5&

A search will bring up more cancan photos.

You can see and hear Mr. Moreno in action in this role, unfortunately sans cancan girls, at:
