Zaza Goes to the Auction

There are a quite a few stills from "Zaza" up for auction right now.  It is the rarely seen 1939 film starring Claudette Colbert.  These are some of the better ones featuring cancan dancers.

I was aware of Ms. Colbert's cancan, which even made the cover of an issue of "Look" magazine, but the other dancers are new to me.  I once saw a very bad print of the film, but I don't recall seeing them.

You can buy the unwatermarked originals of the photos above at these auctions by Jay Parrino's The Mint and trebla12 Vintage Photos etc.:

From "Zaza"

More in the Attic is the name of the EBay store offering this at auction, not an editorial comment.   The dancer is identified as Penny Gill and was in the chorus for the 1938 film, "Zaza".  Everyone is probably familiar with the Claudette Colbert photos from the movie, but this shows a different aspect of the film.

Zaza is one of those film that seems to be stuck in Hollywood's vaults.  I've never seen it aired by broadcast or cable, and it isn't available at Netflix.

The auction is at:

Zaza 1938

The rarely seen Zaza.  Look fast.  It may be gone soon.  Unfortunately it is in the execrable 3gp format.  This is part 2 of 6.  The other parts are also available on You Tube.

(cancan act starts about 4:05)

Zazà - Italian - 1944

I ran across this additional classic period Italian film that was posted by Epifanies, the same person who posted "Passaporto Rosso".  The complete film is posted in seven parts.  The cancan sequence is in the first and second parts shown below.  Whereas Claudette Colbert did the cancan in the US version of Zaza, Isa Miranda only sings and flits her skirts a little in this one shortly following the appearance of the the cancan dancers and a few other acts.  In Part One the performances open with a fat lady (in cancan costume) who sings, but thankfully doesn't dance, starting at 6:50.  The real cancan starts about 8:55 and continues on and off for a while and also continues in Part Two at the conclusion of  Zazà's act.  Part Two contains another musical number by Zazà, from which the first photo above is taken.  The next two photos are screen captures from the video.

Unfortunately the videos are too large to load at Blogger, so you will need to view them directly at YouTube:

All the segments of the film can be accessed at:

About the film:

Trivia:

Zaza originally was a play by Pierre Berton and was adapted as an opera by Ruggiero Leoncavallo.  I wonder if the opera staging ever contains a cancan?

There apparently is a 1956 French film version of Zazà starring Lilo (of 1953 "Can-Can" fame), which I have not seen, but which offers possibilites.

Party Time

Betty Grable, in Claudette Colbert's costume from Zaza, and Martha Raye, also in costume, do an impromptu cancan at a Hollywood party.
