A Bar at the Folies-Bergère?

From the Ebay description:

"Lovely vintage b/w photo negative showing a quartet of pretty girl dancers posed in a rather risque manner in front of, and on top of, a bar counter.

The fact that two of the dancers are posing whilst doing the move colloquially known as “The Splits” whilst the other two are lifting their frilled petticoat skirts to show their shapely legs, makes it pretty obvious that this little troupe are surely performers of that most iconic of French dances - the Can-Can! Their feathered head-dresses, chokers, fishnet tights, garters, and silky knickers are all entirely in keeping with that role!

From the girls’ hairstyles and the look of the décor (with its Lloyd-Loom chairs, garish wallpaper, and ‘quilted’ effect bar-frontage) I initially assumed this photo to have been taken in the 1960’s. However, the price rung-up on the till looks to be “4-5” which is likely four pounds five shillings, but could also be £4.50 if taken after decimalisation? As such, this photo might equally well have been taken in the early 1970’s?

The sadly unnamed venue has the look of a working-mans-club or holiday camp – and I guess that our girls were “the turn” for that night, and were enthusiastically snapped by the camp photographer or perhaps by the local newspaper? I assume that the photographer was a professional given the quality of the image and the large-scale format of the negative.

Either way, this lovely b/w negative is an echo of times gone-bye and is perhaps as much of interest to the social historian, as to the connoisseur of ‘swinging-sixties’ pin-up culture or those with an interest in dance-history."
