Old Time Rock 'n Roll

A companion posting to the Rock 'n Roll post at Club CCD.  These show how it actually was back then.  I think the first four are actually from the period  - the others appear to be retro.

The well dressed lady of the period would have worn stockings and a garter belt.  (Sock hops with teenagers were different, of course.)  It would be much nicer and more realistic if some of the present day retro rock and roll dance groups harked back to the actual styles of the period.

I have fond memories of a school dance from about 1957-58 held in the cafeteria of my junior high school.  It was one of the few times I got to see a genuine rock and roll dance with girls wearing full skirts and petticoats like those shown above.  Styles changed for the worse shortly afterward.  I remember one of the more "advanced" girls in my grade spinning over and over to show off her undies.  I'm surprised some spoil sport principal or teacher didn't step in to shut things down, but fortunately no one did.

Francoise Arnoul - Smiling

The first image at the site below is labelled as being Francoise Arnoul, the lead cancaneuse in "French Cancan".  The costume doesn't match those used in the film, and she doesn't look just like the pouty-faced actress did at the time of the film.  However, she does look like the images of Ms. Arnoul taken several years later that appear at the same site below. Whoever she is, this is a nice photo.  It is available at Getty Images:
