Forsaking the Hula

Ballroom dancers from Hawaii put on a cancan show.  My guess is that this photo is from the 1960s although it is not dated.  I cheated a bit and turned the original brightly colored photo into black and white to keep with the rules of this blog.  You can see the technicolor version and a nice write up about the occasion at the That's Dancing blog:

Burlesque - Can Can Follies

A still photo of the cancan dancers from an old burlesque show.  This can be had at an EBay auction:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/ORIGINAL-8X10-BURLESQUE-CAN-CAN-UP-SKIRT-STAGE-REVUE-/171113098712?pt=Art_Photo_Images&hash=item27d722add8

There are a couple of videos of this - very similar to each other.   It is clear from them that the performers are showgirls rather than dancers.  Still, they are worth seeing for the classic look and the nostalgic value.

One called "Can Can Follies" can be seen on You Tube:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UovQ1ybovEU

I think the other is a routine called "Folliettes" from a video called "Love Moods".

Both videos have been available from Something Weird Videos in the past.  Something Weird has a large collection of B (or C)-movies and burlesque, horror, sex-ploitation and stag films from the Thirties through the Seventies.

Classic Moulin Rouge

One of the best classic photos I have seen, this recently appeared on the Moulin Rouge's own site along with a number of other photos from the Moulin Rouge's long history.

The collection can be seen at:

http://www.moulinrouge.fr/history/periods?lang=en

I'll probably repost the best of them from the relevant time period here at Classic Cancan if you want to stay tuned.

Rich, Young and Pretty

The cancan from the first few minutes of "Rich, Young and Pretty" from 1951.  Having seen the film, the cancan isn't that great despite the promise offered by this still photo.

This is available at an EBay sale:

Surrealism

An example of surrealism I think you will like can be found at:

http://blog.jedroot.com/.a/6a00d8341cbefd53ef0128772f7d79970c-500wi

This is a photo by Georges Hugnet entitled,  "Paris by Night", which is part of a show entitled, "'Twilight Visions: Surrealism, Photography, and Paris, a portrait of a city in transition as seen through the eyes of Brassaï, André Kertész, Ilse Bing, Man Ray, and others'.  The show is at the International Center of Photography from January 29th through May 9th, 2010. Organized by guest curator Therese Lichtenstein, Twilight Visions offered a unique insight into the impact of the Surrealist aesthetic on those photographers working in Paris in the 1920's and '30s. Presenting over 150 photographs, magazines, films, and ephemera of the period, the exhibition highlights the visionary role that photographers played in both the avant-garde art world of Paris and in the rise of a new mass-media culture."

Florelle

Florelle, the lead cancan dancer in L'Atlantide, in a couple of poses from another unidentified film, plus a repeat from L'Atlantide.  She had an amazingly long film career spanning the years from 1912-1956.

Officers' Wives Club

A nifty little newspaper clipping of an amateur show from the classic period can be seen at:

The ladies are being pretty daring for a newpaper photo from that period.  Wish I'd seen the show.
