Caleen Calder in "The Half-Breed"

Another publicity photo from the 1951 film, "The Half-Breed".  This is Caleen Calder, who is one of the dancers in the film.

This great image is available on EBay from sfxarchive.  The auction is at:

However, there appears to be some deceptive advertising going on here.  I skimmed the film using the You Tube preview feature, and didn't see a cancan.  There is a musical number at about 9:45.  Perhaps it got left on the cutting room floor or this is an edited version of the film.  If someone else can find it in the film, please let me know.

Here's another image from a German film magazine that confirms it was promoted as having a cancan:

A Midnight Rounder

The skirt is not long enough for this to be a cancan pose, but I thought it was a neat photo anyway.  The dancer is Lenore Lukens.

From a EBay auction of this clipping from Theatre Magazine (1920):

Your Hit Parade

Your Hit Parade was a 1950's variety show that took popular songs and created musical numbers around them.  I can remember watching some of the shows.  Here is a specimen with a cancan.  The quality is kinoscope-poor, but it makes for a nice nostalgia trip, including the pre-Don Draper commercials.

(The cancan appears at about 22:00)

The original is at:

By the way, I found this searching "cancan dancers" at IMDB.

The show would seem to have been an ideal format for an occasional cancan number.  And there probably are other shows from this series that, while not including actual cancans, may include other dances of interest.  An example:

(At about 7:25)

Bal Tabarin?

Recycling a great classic photo from my Flickr page.  My guess is that the dancers were from the Bal Tabarin.  The original provenance of this is lost.

Vivian Blaine

Vivian Blaine in a cheescake shot.  But she danced an actual cancan in "Nob Hill."
