British Pathe

One of our members called my attention to the video archives of British Pathe.   You may have seen them before but there is some great classic material there that deserves another visit.  Included are these four videos that show the cancan at Bal Tabarin  from the late 20s through the late 40s:

1929:

And in 1939:

And in 1947:

And in 1949:

Also, there are many more that you can locate through use of the search feature on the pages.

Meet Phyllis Dixey

There is no cancan in this short film from 1944, but it features the real "The One and Only Phyllis Dixey" (played by Leslie Anne Down in the 1978 television film, in which she does a cancan).  It also shows Phyllis in a teasing scene wrapped in a towel and some scenes at the Windmill Theatre, including some showgirls and some "lassies" prancing around in very short kilts.

This is another of the British Pathe films, and it can be seen in a very clear print at:

Rolling Acrobatics (1935)

Another 1930s roller skating act via British Pathe:

Cancan from "BBC MUSICALS NO. 3" 1936

An unexpected find.  Quite a nice acrobatic performance from 1936 which starts at about 12:47.  I think the dancer was Ella Drummond.
