Come hither

If I'm not mistaken, I believe these are the cancan girls backing Merle Oberon's Kitty Langley in "The Lodger"  with a none too subtle message.

From the blog of A l'intérieur du Jardin Secret:

The Lodger

Merle Oberon demonstrates the "Parisian Trot" as she makes her way between rows of cancan dancers as Jack the Ripper becomes increasingly outraged in the audience.

Google Cultural Institute

There is a new research tool available for classic images - Google Cultural Institute.  The photo above of Merle Oberon dancing the "Parisian Trot" is from a set of publicity photos taken in September 1943 by John Florea  for a  Life Magazine article about her dancing the cancan in The Lodger.  It is included in the Life Magazine collection contained in the Cultural Institute.   Some of these photos have been available otherwise, but others, like the one above, have not been.

There are 23 photos of Ms. Oberon in this set, including just a few you probably have seen before.  The link to the Oberon photos is:

The search function at the top of that page will lead you to other items of interest.

The Google Cultural Institute has a wide variety of material about many different subjects.  The project is described at:

Dancing from The Haunted Strangler

In recognition of Halloween -

Cancan routines seem to have a place in the older "horror" movies set in the 19th century, including this very nice routine (unfortunately speeded up) frorm The Haunted Strangler.  Other examples of the genre are The Lodger/Man in the Attic, House of Wax and various Jekyll/Hyde and Rue Morgue movies.

(cancan starts about 33:00)(sorry about the subtitles - the non-subtitled versions have been deleted)

The Ripper story has had other notable film associations with the cancan - "The Lodger" (1944) and its remake, "Man in the Attic".
