Romance de Medio Siglo (Romance of Half a Century)

This Chilean film is from 1944 and features a very nice classic cancan despite appearances from the screen shot above.  (If there is a way to change them, I haven't figured it out yet.)

It was originally posted at You Tube by ferrer1650 at:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=epKDOX5UJks

The description given was:

Rediscovered

I found these forgotten photos on my hard drive in a folder named, "goater".

Many thanks to goater for these great shots, at least two of which are definitely classic era photos.

Perhaps someone can translate and identify the club where these were taken from the caption on the second photo.

I'll add them to the 2012 Additions Album.

Welcome Message

Welcome to the new Classic Cancan Group at Blogger/Blogspot. This is a continuation of the Multiply group of the same name. That site is going dark on December 1 due to a decision by Multiply to discontinue its blogs and groups.

We encourage everyone who was a member of the Multiply Classic Cancan Group to become a member (Author) here too, so that you can fully participate in the site.

The Group is set up as a public group. That means anyone can see it by typing in the URL. However, to post or comment you need to be added as an Author. That has to be done by invitation, and there isn't a feature on the Blog for you to ask to be added as a Author. Unfortunately, Multiply doesn't seem to allow mass mailings of invitations to members of the old group and doesn't give email addresses from which the invitations can be generated. However, if you are a member of Cancan Favorites or one of the other Yahoo cancan groups (and if you did not hide your email address there), you have already received an invitation to join the new Club CCD. If you responded to that you will also receive an invitation to join this group.  Otherwise, to join the new group and post, you will need to send an email to Barbebleu's email address at Yahoo (barbebleu2006). You will then receive an invitation by email (check your spam/junk folder if you dodn't see it your inblox). Follow the instructions in the invitation to join. You will have to register with Google (which owns Blogger) to do so, but many of you are probably already registered with them.

We have tried to preserve the features of the Multiply group, but the format is very different. The main page is a blog with consecutive entries. The blog posts can have photos or videos in them, but that would not be convenient from the standpoint of accessing all the photos, videos or other features. To accommodate that we have set up the Pages listed on the right hand side of the Blog. Clicking on the links for them will take you to pages for the subjects listed.

Only administrators will be able to edit or add to those pages and the related albums, but we will try to copy over to the albums the photos and videos that are posted in messages.

We are still learning about Blogger and tweaking the site, so there will likely be some changes. For example, there has not been sufficient time to copy over the descriptions of the pictures. Also, we used the migration tool that Multiply provided. Most of the postings appear to have come over alright, but it is possible that some of them did not make it here.  We will try to do some cleanup here as time permits.

We'll look forward to your participation

At Last! They're Here on Club CCD

Ladies & Gentlemen,
My personal business is finally concluded, and I can now proceed with posting my pictures of the 2012 Santa Barbara French Festival to the Club.  I will be sure to post them in a separate album all together, and also see if I can post them in my future updates.  Before long, I will have 30 more up for the club.  Trust me, it's worth the wait
Enjoy!

Ladies & Gentlemen, I have great news!

From July 14-15 the Santa Barbara, California French Festival will be happening and I am writing as we speak from a hotel room on the southern edge of town. Of course, the can-can is always the hottest number, and on this occasion, I will be there all day tomorrow with my camera in hand & a few tricks up my sleeve that will endear me into the hearts of the ladies and their ballet mistress.

Here is the link for anyone who wants to look into it: http://www.frenchfestival.com/

I have waited a long time to see a good can-can with my own eyes, and now my time has come! Besides pictures, I should have an interview with ballet mistress added to the future as well. If I may be granted permission, I would like to say to the teacher that I represent a small, but devoted group of people who consider themselves can-can connoisseurs. I would be quite interested in learning the details of how such a beautiful performance is put together so well year after year.

As I've stated before, I have my own criteria for evaluating a can-can performance. There are, I believe, 5 components that I grade on a scale from 1 to 10.

1. Attention to Detail: How well are the costumes & accessories put together? I always notice details.

2. Authenticity of Costumes: How well are the ladies dressed? Are they well put-together and vintage-inspired?

3. Choreography: How much thought goes into the dance? Is it like the old days? Are there extra flourishes?

4. Length of the Music: How long does the performance last? What soundtrack?

5. Performance Enthusiasm: Are the ladies really into their craft?

I am looking forward to the festival, and will provide as much detail as possible in the very near future. Stay tuned, I have a feeling you will not be disappointed.

Salud!

1930's Italian Newreels

I found some Italian newsreel archives on You Tube that contain interesting historical cancan footage from the 1930's. They aren't spectacular, but I think you'll find them interesting with some nice classic costuming.

The one called "Il Can Can"  is from "La Boutique Fantasque".   Would a ballet troupe today costume this ballet with garter belts and stockings?  I doubt it.

The second one appears to be from a music hall and purports to be from Paris, but I couldn't discern where it was filmed. It looks more like a huge movie soundstage, but since it is a newsreel, I assume it was an actual place in Paris. I recognize the music as being the same as part of the music in "French Cancan", but I don't know what it is.

The fourth one says it is from Moulin de la Galette.

Se solicitan modelos

The cancan from the 1954 Mexican film, "Se solicitan modelos". The original was posted by SuperStanila at YouTube:

Abajo el telón

The cancan scene from Abajo el telón, a 1955 Mexican film starring Cantinflas. This is another new find for me. I wasn't aware of the film previously. It contains a very nice classic period cancan, with a lot of spinning. Cantinflas is up to his usual hijinks and grabs the best seat in the house.

For the full film, see the You Tube posting by cantinflasenlinea:

The cancan starts at about 1:20.

Fernsehunterhaltung Silvester 1966

Don't touch that dial!

From a 1966 German holiday television program. I am not sure of the identity of the dance group and am not sure if this is from West Germany or the DDR. The atmosphere and costuming are definitely early 60's.

The original, along with various other segments of this program, can be seen at You Tube, where the poster was fritz51210.

The quality of the video is very good for the time period.

La Casta Susana (Argentina 1944)

I am familiar with the 1963 French-Spanish film of this name that contains two very nice cancans, but finding this came as a very pleasant surprise.

It's a true spectacle with classic costumes and more dancers than you can count. I'd love to see a higher resolution version of this.

The full film is posted on You Tube. This is excerpted from part 2, which you can find at:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BIXJOKcvF6w (starts about 28.30, although there is a music hall scene earlier that doen't qualify as a cancan)

Joan O'Meara's Can Can Girls - Circa 1965

I really have a fondness for amateur cancan performances. Here's a wonderful circa 1965 rehearsal in costume captured on super 8 or perhaps just 8mm. The dancing is suprisingly good for an outdoors rehearsal with non-professional dancers.

This was posted by Bucky315 at You Tube where you can read more about the dancers:
